Mezzanine Floor Steel Staircase

What is a Warehouse Mezzanine Floor?

A mezzanine floor is a raised platform that is independent of the warehouse’s building structure, providing a secondary level between floors that is generally supported by steel columns (steel uprights) or racking structures and the surface layer consists of either timber, steel or treadplate.

Mezzanine floors provide a smart and efficient way to expand your warehouse storage space without the need for expensive construction or relocation, being able to sustain racking and shelving solutions, which can also be installed by T2 Storage, to store your inventory or stock more efficiently.

Being able to be installed at any point, mezzanine floors are considered a semi-permanent structure and therefore, depending on the size and usage, planning permission is sometimes unrequired.

Mezzanines can be combined with a range of accessories to meet British Standards, including Handrails, Staircases, Pallet Gates, Lifts and More, all sourced and installed by T2 Storage.

Benefits vs Costs

Installing a warehouse mezzanine system for your warehouse enables you to think more about using your cubic capacity rather than the ground floor footprint, opening up many benefits and savings.

Thinking cubically means you may not require as large of a property as you originally expected, saving on reduced rent, bills etc. A warehouse mezz allows you to expand without pushing your budget, and providing your headroom permits, you can further increase your usable capacity through multi-tier mezzanine floors structures.

Another advantage to a mezzanine floor is the ability to split your warehouse into sectors, having one floor for storage and one for production or office use. This can drastically increase your throughput, picking times, operation and travel times. Separating your operational area can also increase workplace safety by separating footfall through busy operation areas.

Different Types of Mezzanine Floor

A free standing warehouse mezzanine floor is the most common type of flooring and is ideal for general-purpose use. These are independent and utilise columns, beans and decking and can be modified to suit your load capacity.

A rack-supported mezzanine floor can utilise your existing or newly installed racking system to create an elevated storage area. These are great for storage warehouses and distribution centers and is built directly onto the pallet racking.

An industrial shelving supported mezzanine floor are the perfect solution for retail environments where storage and display is required. The shelving becomes the main support for the mezzanine floor, maximising storage space without sacrificing accessibility.

Building Regulations in the UK

Does a mezzanine floor need building regulations?

Mezzanine floors can often be installed without planning permission due to them being independent of the building structure, however they will still require building regulation approval.

Here at T2 Storage Solutions we are happy to assist you through the process or we will apply on your behalf, certifying that your flooring project meets all required government agency approval and complies fully with building and fire regulations, and British standards.

1: Planning Permission

In the UK, most mezzanine floor installations fall under the purview of building regulations, which aim to ensure structural integrity, fire safety and accessibility. T2 Storage handles this process on your behalf, ensuring your new mezzanine floor meet regulation.

2: Structural Considerations

Building regulations require careful consideration of the structural aspects of your mezzanine floor, including load-bearing capacity, materials used and structural calculations. Our qualified structure engineers assess these features to ensure compliance with the regulations.

3: Fire Safety Measures

Fire Safety is of utmost importance when installing a mezzanine floor. The regulations outline requirements for fire resistance depending on usage, escape routes, smoke detection and fire suppression systems.

4: Access and Means of Escape

Building regulations dictate that all mezzanine floors must provide safe and adequate means of access and escape. This includes the careful planning and consideration of staircases, handrails, guardrails, and emergency exits to ensure the safe movement of people.
